A Chinese man angered Japan by placing joss paper, or “hell money,” into a donation box at Tokyo’s Sensoji Temple to seek blessings. Replacing the 100-yen donation, he drew a fortune stick, calling Japanese rituals ineffective for Chinese. Locals condemned the act as disrespectful to cultural and religious traditions.
