High On Drugs, Alaska Pilot Attempts Mid-Air Engine Shutdown
An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot, Joseph Emerson, reportedly high on magic mushrooms, tried to shut down engines mid-air on a Seattle–San Francisco flight in October 2023. Passengers and crew were safe after an emergency landing in Portland. Emerson pleaded guilty to interfering with a flight crew and received probation, time served, and supervised release.
